When Willow wrote home—this time to accept her mother’s help with the rent—she tried to describe the place in a way that might intrigue her stoic mother: Old and discreet, rue Séguier runs between rue Saint-André-des-Arts and the Quai des Grands-Augustins. The sun does not enter except in high summer and in random shafts, so the street lives in its shadow and protects its own peace. It is tangential to the Seine, sandwiched between two busy streets where tourists eagerly buy postcards, snap pictures of Notre-Dame, and order paninis from fake crêperies. I wonder why few visitors are reluctant to make a turn and venture down this path. Were the illusion of a mere residential street too perfect to be true, its sense of austerity would have shunned the foreigners. Behind closed doors and damask curtains, life carries on much as in a novel without a proper end. Bells from the favorite cathedral of Paris echo in the midst of Bach or Brahms. Up in the air—a piano is safe wherever it lands.
